Ilha do Mel

This weekend we decided to take a trip to Honey Island, or Ilha do Mel. We left Saturday morning with lots of different methods of travel ahead! Thankfully, our new friend Hermano came with us to help us translate! :) We got in a taxi from the hotel, which took us to the bus station.

After a 2 and 1/2 hour bus ride, we got on a 30-minute ferry to the island! On our ferry ride, we ran into our tour guide from a while back, Eugenio!!! WHAT A SMALL WORLD! We continue to be amazed at how small the world is, even in Brazil. Anyway, back to the boat ride. It was very rough. I was thankful my Dad always taught me to look at the horizon to avoid seasickness!!

When we got to the Encantadas side of the island, we were so excited! It was absolutely beautiful. When you get off the ferry (which by the way is a 50 ft boat with seats inside, not like our car ferrys!), it was high tide. So, this means you have to get your feet wet to get to the hostel! We loved it. We settled into our home for the night and began to relax. It’s easy to do with a view like that!
The next morning it was cloudy, so we decided to go explore the island. In the wise words of my friend Lucy, everything happens for a reason. If we had just decided to lay out on the beach, we never would have seen this…
These are the caves of Honey Island. What a breathtaking sight- I’m pretty sure one of our friends has a picture of our faces looking shocked at the incredibly gorgeous sight! We took TONS of pictures and admired its beauty for a long time.

It was a great trip. We are really learning how to travel while abroad, because we are getting more comfortable here! We are ½ way through our trip, which we can’t even fathom! Here’s to the “better half!”
