When I went to Haiti, I was faced with a language barrier. I
knew very little Creole. So, we had to make a lot of hand gestures to help each
other understand. I was certainly more careful to make sure my speech was
perfect, and that I was speaking without slang or idioms. All this took a long
time. This, in turn, helped us bond. When I talk to someone normally, I don’t
use many hand gestures and I definitely don’t make sure I’m using correct and
easily understandable English.
